In the name of Allah,
The Messenger of Allah, who was the most polite, is the best example we have. Allah described him as:
And you are truly ˹a man˺ of outstanding character. [Translation 68:4]
Even when interacting with youngsters, the Prophet of Allah (Peace be upon him) had a good moral character. With them, he was always extremely kind and fun. A little child with the nickname Abu Umayr had a small bird named Nughayr that looked like a sparrow. The child was saddened and upset because the bird had passed away. The prophet (Peace be upon him) then comforted him by using rhymes.
Anas narrated:
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to mix with us to the extent that he would say to a younger brother of mine,
يَا أَبَا عُمَيْرٍ مَا فَعَلَ النُّغَيْرُ ”
‘O Aba `Umair! What did the Nughair (a kind of bird) do?”[i]
Once a Bedouin entered the mosque and started urinating there. Until the Prophet (Peace be upon him) intervened, the people severely criticized and chastised him. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) merely ordered a water container to be poured over the urine after the Bedouin completed urinating. He then summoned him over and addressed him as follows:
“It is not proper for any harmful or dirty things to be allowed in these masjids, rather they are only for prayer and the recitation of the Qur’aan.”[ii]
This story illustrates his good manners because he did not rebuke the Bedouin or demand that he be thrashed. Instead, he allowed him to complete urinating before instructing him that such behavior is improper in masjids, which are instead used for prayer, remembrance, and reciting the Qur’an.
Once a man approached him in Ramadhaan and exclaimed, “O Allah’s Messenger! I’m ruined!”
Narrated Abu Huraira:
A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, “I am ruined!” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “What is the matter with you?” He said, “I had sexual relation with my wife (while I was fasting) in Ramadan.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Have you got enough to manumit a slave?” He said, “No.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Can you fast for two successive months?” The man said, “No.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Can you feed sixty poor persons?” The man said, “No.” Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, “Sit down,” and he sat down. Afterward an ‘Irq, i.e., a big basket containing dates was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Prophet (ﷺ) said to him, “Take this and give it in charity.” The man said, “To poorer people than we?” On that, the Prophet (ﷺ) smiled till his premolar teeth became visible, and then told him, “Feed your family with it.” [iii]
This individual was not reprimanded, ridiculed, or rebuked by the prophet (Peace be upon him), demonstrating his excellent character in an evident way. Instead, he was treated with kindness and wisdom.
He was afraid and remorseful for what he had done since he understood that this man had come in repentance. Therefore, the Prophet (Peace be upon him) decided that this man should not be penalized; rather, the proper ruling should just be conveyed to him, and he should be treated gently.
